MIPv6 Experimental Evaluation using Overlay Networks
The commercial deployment of Mobile IPv6 has been hastened by the concepts of Integrated
Wireless Networks and Overlay Networks, which are present in the notion of the
forthcoming generation of wireless communications. Individual wireless access networks
show limitations that can be overcome through the integration of different technologies
into a single unified platform (i.e., 4G systems). This paper summarises practical experiments
performed to evaluate the impact of inter-networking (i.e. vertical handovers) on
the Network and Transport layers. Based on our observations, we propose and evaluate a
number of inter-technology handover optimisation techniques, e.g., Router Advertisements
frequency values, Binding Update simulcasting, Router Advertisement caching, and Soft
Handovers. The paper concludes with the description of a policy-based mobility support
middleware (PROTON) that hides 4G networking complexities from mobile users, provides
informed handover-related decisions, and enables the application of different vertical
handover methods and optimisations according to context.Publicad
On the Potential of Flow-Based Routing in Multihomed Environments
The data rates provisioned by broadband Internet access connections continue to fall short of the requirements posed by emerging applications. Yet the potential of statistical multiplexing of the last mile broadband connections remains unexploited even as the average utilization of these connections remains low. Despite recent work in this area [15, 20], two key questions remain unanswered: a) What is the attainable benefit of broadband access sharing? and b) How much of this benefit is realizable given real-world constraints? In this work we quantify the attainable benefit of a multihomed broadband access environment by proposing and evaluating several flow-based access sharing policies using a custom flow-based simulator. We then analyze how much of the performance benefit is lost due to real-world constraints by migrating from simulations to a test-lab environment employing a wireless network. Our results show that in today’s broadband Internet access scenarios, a significant reduction in download times by up to a factor of 3 is achievable
Irradiated-assisted electrochemical processes for the removal of persistent pollutants from real wastewater
In this work, it is studied the treatment of real wastewater (intensified with two target compounds) using electro-irradiated technologies. Two types of effluents coming from an organic-synthesis pharmaceutical industry and the outlet of a municipal wastewater treatment plant were intensified with metoprolol (β-blocker) and caffeine (stimulant), respectively. Conductive diamond electrochemical oxidation (CDEO), photolysis, sonolysis and all possible combinations among these technologies were evaluated for the treatment of both wastes. Results demonstrate that complete oxidation of the target compounds, as well as mineralization of the organic compounds contained in the matrixes, can be attained by all electro-irradiated technologies and no salt addition was needed to obtain an efficient treatment. Single irradiated technologies were inefficient in the oxidation but their combination with CDEO improves significantly the efficiency of the process showing clear synergistic effects. However, due to the large energy requirement of ultrasound irradiation, this combination is only cost-effective in the case of ultraviolet irradiation.
Coupling UV light and US irradiation with CDEO for the removal of progesterone
This work focusses on the improvement of the efficiency of Conductive Diamond Electrochemical Oxidation (CDEO) by coupling US and UV irradiation in the degradation of progesterone from wastewater. Results show that CDEO is a promising technology for the degradation of progesterone, just the opposite of that observed for single sonolysis and photolysis technologies, which only entail a slight removal of progesterone and nil mineralization. Coupling UV light and US irradiations with CDEO seems to have a very positive effect, improving results obtained by single CDEO very significantly. Conductive Diamond Sono Electrochemical Oxidation (CDSEO) mainly seems to improve the transfer of pollutants to the conductive-diamond surface, while Conductive Diamond Photo Electrochemical Oxidation (CDPEO) seems to promote the formation of radicals from oxidants produced electrochemically. Soft oxidation conditions are obtained with the single application of both irradiation technologies, whereas an efficient mineralization is attained with CDEO, CDSEO, CDPEO and Conductive Diamond Sono-Photo Electrochemical Oxidation (CDSPEO). However, the high energy demands of US irradiation technologies advices against the use of CDSEO and CDSPEO

Soluble co-signaling molecules predict long-term graft outcome in kidney-transplanted patients
Co-signaling molecules are responsible for full T-cell activation after solid organ transplantation. Their increased expression can lead to the release of a soluble form that can modulate the immune response post-transplantation. We analyzed the presence of co-signaling molecules (sCD30, sCD40, sCD137, sCTLA-4, sCD80, sCD28, sCD40L, sPD-1, and sPD-L1) in serum from kidney-transplanted patients (n = 59) obtained at different times (before transplantation, and 15 days, 3 months and 1 year post-transplantation) and their contribution to graft outcome was evaluated using principal component analysis. Before transplantation, high levels of soluble co-signaling molecules (mainly sCD30, sCD137 and sCD40) were detected in all patients. These molecules were modulated soon after receiving an allograft but never attained similar levels to those of healthy controls. A signature based on the determination of six soluble co-stimulatory (sCD30, sCD40, sCD137 and sCD40L) and co-inhibitory (sPD-1 and sPD-L1) molecules at 3 months post-transplantation allowed a group of patients to be identified (27.12%) with a worse long-term graft outcome. Patients with high levels of soluble molecules showed a progressive and gradual deterioration of kidney function (increased creatinine and proteinuria levels and decreased estimated glomerular filtration rate) over time and a higher risk of graft loss at 6 years post-transplantation than patients with low levels of these molecules (62.55% versus 5.14%, p<0.001). Thus, our data show an aberrant expression of soluble co-signaling molecules in kidney-transplanted patients whose quantification at 3 months post-transplantation might be a useful biomarker of immune status and help to predict long-term graft evolution
